Constance E. Clayton, the first African American and woman to lead the School District of Philadelphia, died on Monday, September 18. She was 89.
A trailblazer, education advocate, humanitarian and mentor, Clayton was known for her leadership style and her dedication to improving the lives of students through education.
Clayton was born in Philadelphia in 1933. As a child, she played the piano and cello. She attended Dunbar Elementary School, Jay Cooke Junior High School and the Philadelphia High School for Girls.
She received degrees from Temple University and from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education.
Clayton would spend her career as a Philadelphia educator. She began teaching elementary school in 1955. During her tenure in the School District of Philadelphia, she served in multiple roles.
She designed the social studies curriculum and would lead the district’s African American studies program. She also introduced an African American History curriculum to classrooms across the district. Philadelphia would later become the first district to make African American studies a requirement for graduation.
Clayton was named the superintendent for the School District of Philadelphia in 1982 and served in that role until her retirement in 1993.
