Will Generative AI Kill-off Artists and Illustrators? Are we all doomed!?
AI is getting so good at creating images - will it destroy the art and illustration business? Is it worth learning to draw anymore?
I had a worried comment from @Yorana last week, worried that AI might make artists and illustrators obsolete.
I'm a bit nerdy about tech, but I've not bothered to check out Generative AI recently. Things have been happening and are advancing swiftly.
I looked at DALL.E ( see a video from them here • DALL·E 2 Explained )
Their video is highly edited so you don't get to see all the rubbish that was created before they got their lovely images.
When I asked for some simple images off the top of my head, I was disappointed - but... some of the images were interesting starting points - creative hints like a little bit of grit in the oyster - it needs a human to keep working at the idea - either through the AI interface or by sketching out ideas on paper.
AI is not being original. it is mashing stuff together in a very clever and sometimes surprising way, but it relies on human input. You may notice soem of the animals have five legs!
At the moment the quality is such that those who will use it are not the sort of people who would commision art.
But at the speed things are progressing, that might change quite soon.
The answer? Be an original - stick to your weird, wonderful personal vision. Be human.
