Elsa Lanchester made a big name for herself in the 1920s with a London stage career which included theatre, cabaret, revue and appearances in several silent films. H. G. Wells, author of 'The War of the Worlds,' 'The Time Machine,' 'The First Men in the Moon' and many other such classic books - was an admirer of Elsa and he wrote three short stories for her that were filmed just as the silent era was coming to an end. By this time, Elsa had become romantically attached to a rising young actor called Charles Laughton. He had been cast in one of the plays in which Elsa appeared and, just for fun, he took very small parts in each of her three silent Wells films.

"Blue Bottles" began when H. G. Wells looked at Elsa and said "Elsa blows a whistle." This led to a yarn in which she helped the police (known as "Bluebottles" in those days) capture a gang of criminals. Charles is seen as one of them, momentarily taking a pot shot at Elsa from behind a chair.

As I also have a few Laughton and Lanchester items in my own channel, I wanted to add this one as well! ... I should say that I've also uploaded THE TONIC here, another of the H. G. Wells "silent shorts" that were released in 1928. We only await an upload of DAYDREAMS and then we'll have all three on YouTube!

Here is "The Tonic" ...
