This Moana theory makes Maui’s story seem pretty ridiculous. According to the theory, Maui could’ve escaped his island prison anytime he wanted, but he just didn’t believe in himself. Despite saying, “Without my hook, I am nothing,” he survived for 1,000 years on the island without it and has superhuman strength. Maui can swim well, even though he claims he struggles with floating. He tries to swim away from Moana’s canoe, but the ocean keeps bringing him back. The theory argues that Maui could’ve easily escaped if he had really tried. He’s a shapeshifter and a demigod with incredible powers, so it's odd that he didn’t come up with a plan to get off the island. Maybe the ocean, which is a sentient character in the movie, kept him trapped until Moana arrived to help. It fits with the film’s theme of overcoming self-doubt and staying true to oneself. Although, it’s worth noting Maui does say he can do anything but float. What do you think of this theory?
