The literary and cinematographic jewel of German expressionism
In 1915 'The Golem', by Gustav Meyrink, appeared, a novel that for Borges is “the dizzying story of a dream” and according to H.P. Lovecraft contains “haunting, dark hints of wonder and horror.” And in 1920 'The Golem as it came into the world', a feature film directed by Paul Wegener and Carl Boese, was released.
In this report we analyze convergences and divergences between both works, representative of a historical era and the cultural current called expressionism, which had Germany between the First War and the rise of Nazism as fertile ground for its birth, rise and fall in a brief but turbulent period. We also include a new version of the film with intertitles in Spanish.
