The announcement, more than a decade ago, of a "Pivot to Asia” marked a dramatic departure in American grand strategy. In their new book, Robert D. Blackwill and Richard Fontaine detail this attempted shift to an Asia-centric foreign policy, examine it in a global perspective, and draw out lessons for policymakers today. Lost Decade: The US Pivot to Asia and the Rise of Chinese Power concludes that, while the Pivot's strategic logic is strong, there remains a deep need for a more coherent U.S. approach to the Indo-Pacific region. The book employs recent historical experience to chart a path for putting Asia first in U.S. strategy, even while maintaining key commitments in Europe and the Middle East.
Join CNAS on Wednesday, June 12 for a virtual event with the authors. They will discuss the Pivot strategy, assess the effort thus far, and propose a way ahead for the United States in Asia and beyond.
The event will be moderated by Ellen Nakashima, national security reporter at The Washington Post.
