It is important to note that retinoid creams should never be used without the consultation of a licensed physician or dermatologist. This is because retinoids can cause severe chemical burns, hyperpigmentation, and irreversible skin damage if not used correctly. It is also important to avoid the use of retinoids if pregnant.
It is important to understand the difference between retinol and retinoids. Retinol is a mild serum that can be found in drugstores, whereas retinoids are highly potent and are only available at pharmacies. My personal favorite retinol serum is The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, which is well-tolerated.
It is important to exercise caution when using retinol or retinoids, especially if you have sensitive skin, open wounds/ulcers, dermatitis, a history of reactions after retinol use, rosacea, skin barrier damage, or have recently had facial treatments. It is also preferable to use prophylactic retinol after the age of 20, as the natural turnover of skin cells is good before that age.
