About 1 in 3 Americans say they definitely or probably won't get the COVID-19 vaccine.
That's according to a new AP-NORC poll.
Amelia Burke-Garcia, program area director at NORC at the University of Chicago says, "There is a lot of work to be done as it relates to addressing concerns around the rollout of the new vaccine. Vaccine hesitancy feelings are high, especially among communities of color."
The poll found that 67% of Americans plan to get vaccinated or have already done so.
But 15% are certain they won't and 17% say probably not.
Dr. Anthony Fauci is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
"The herd immunity by estimate, is somewhere, I think, between 70 and 85 percent of the population," says Fauci.
" I don't know that is a fact because the only way you'll know it is that when you get a certain proportion of the population vaccinated and then it gets below a certain level, you start getting breakthroughs and you say, oops, that was the critical level. So it really is an estimate in my estimate is and I think it's a reasonable estimate, is somewhere between 70 and 85 percent."
Many of those who said they definitely will not get the vaccine cited worries about side effects and distrust.
"Concerns about the new vaccines are linked more to lack of experience or lack of knowledge with the vaccine rather than deep held ideological beliefs," according to Burke-Garcia, "and what that means is that people can be persuaded."
Black Americans appear less likely than white Americans to say they have received the shot or will get vaccinated.
Burke-Garcia sees a real need to share information around the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. She says the public needs to hear personal stories from "diverse perspectives" from "communities of color who are at disproportionately affected by COVID and yet more hesitant to get the vaccine."
Among Hispanic Americans, 65% say they have gotten or plan to get the vaccine.

The AP-NORC poll of 1,055 adults was conducted Jan. 28-Feb. 1 using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
