"The video is a development of a VR process I made for a show in NY last year, I have been working a lot with VR and new technology and thinking about the word ‘immersive’ and what it really means. I realised that I have rarely felt immersed in VR, even if it’s really good I’m still thinking about reality and my surroundings. In contrast, I can easily feel immersed in a book while sat on the tube, and the ‘technology’ of books has been around for centuries...
The idea comes from the dream machines which was an invention of the beat poet Gysin and can create hallucinatory experiences (they were basically tubes of card with holes poked in them that span on a record player). I first experienced a much more advanced Dream Machine a few years ago in an abandoned school in Bethnal Green made by Collective Act and it was brilliant. I really struggle to calm my brain in my day to day life and I think overwhelming it with lights and sound tips me into relaxation, so I came home and started prototyping my own."
