Educators will learn the basic functions of Google Chrome by watching the following video. Within the video are demonstrations of how to use the “omni-box” (search box), new tab functions, and how to organize your bookmarked sites and folders. The “omni-box” takes the place of a regular address bar in Chrome. In addition to giving you a regular address bar, it also allows you to type questions, mathematical equations, measurement conversions, and other queries into the box. Chrome will then deal with your query like a standard Google search and provide answers or links to other websites when available. Chrome’s “New Tab” function allows you the option to click through to your most visited websites without typing in the full address. Finally, the bookmark features within Chrome let you organize your favorite websites into groups based on your preferences.

According to Robertson (2013), Google Apps for Education (GAFE) is a beneficial tool for teachers because it allows them to reflect on pedagogical practices and disseminate information to other educators more efficiently than other cloud computing environments. Since Chrome is a web browser designed by Google to utilize the full functionality within each of its applications, Chrome serves as the operating framework for using GAFE. To put it plainly, giving an organization GAFE without installing Chrome as the default browser is like giving somebody a car but not giving them any keys to drive it. Although Chrome is a web browser by definition, for the purposes of GAFE, it may help to view this as a web-based operating system for your computer or netbook.

Although Chrome is not technically one of the applications within GAFE, its use is imperative if your desire is to employ Google Apps on the individual or organizational level. The purpose of the following tutorials is to provide foundational knowledge about Google Chrome so that all educators and students using this resource guide will have the experience required to operate GAFE. If you are new to Google Apps or you have never used Google Chrome as a web browser, please watch the following videos starting from the beginning. If you are already experienced with Chrome, you may want to skip down to the later videos to learn about changing settings, installing extensions to your browser, and the advanced functions of Chrome.
