What does this 1970s Railroad Crossing Look Like in 2021 ?
This was a pedestrian railroad crossing on the FEC Miami Extension of the Overseas Railway near South Miami at SW 120th Street. In this picture, we see a lady at the RXR waiting for the old candy stripe painted GP locomotive to cross, along with the old wood cross bucks and look out for the cars sign underneath. There weren't any signals or gates or cantlievers here! I'm a fan of old traffic lights and would love to know which ones are pictured. This is a before and after video, so you'll see part of the Little River spur as well the last train to use this stretch of track in 1984 as this railroad was abandoned in sections to make way for the Metro Rail along US 1 mostly in the Coral Gables area. Previous to the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, this line went through the Florida Keys and ultimately to Key West where the first passenger train arrived in 1912 along with Henry Flagler founder of the Florida East Coast Railway ( the first train to Miami arrived in 1896 ). There's a debate on whether or not this line connected with the old Seaboard Air Line ( Currently CSX ) Homestead Subdivision near Florida City which I have an SPV railroad atlas that says it does, however others say no. This would've been prime real estate for Brightline trains in Miami and to relieve our traffic jams and congested highways !
