One of the most powerful positions in a presidential administration is the chief of staff, the person who determines who gets access to the chief executive. In this detailed analysis of the role of the president’s “gatekeeper,” Whipple, the award-winning 60 Minutes and Primetime journalist and producer, draws on his long experience with political reporting and on extensive interviews with seventeen former chiefs of staff and two former presidents. He shows in detail how selection of a chief of staff reflects the president’s character and agenda and how the chief’s decisions can have long-term and sometimes surprising political consequences. Whipple will be in conversation with Ken Duberstein, President Reagan’s chief of staff from 1988 to 1989. The discussion will be moderated by Peter Baker, White House correspondent for The New York Times.
