A Chinese reporter embedded with the Russian military has been reporting freely from under siege cities in eastern Ukraine including Mariupol, capturing footage of where troops are stationed and even interviewing soldiers.

In one of his reports, Lu Yuguang, who works for a state-owned Chinese broadcaster, asks a Russian soldier if he is nervous. The man replies immediately that he wasn’t, adding: “I have been fighting for eight years now.”

In another report, Mr Lu spouts Russian disinformation, claiming that “militants in Kyiv continue to use hostages, which number more than 1,634, as human shields.”

The segment concludes with a dramatic voiceover: “That’s Lu Yuguang, reporting in the field from Mariupol." The camera then pans to show Mr Lu walking down a street as a group of soldiers smile at him from a truck and a medical vehicle drives by.
