Powerful. Moving. Visionary.

There were speeches in the history of the European Union that have made Europe the way it is today.

Herman van Rompuy was Prime Minister of Belgium when he was elected the first full-time President of the European Council in 2009.

He defined this new role as one of dialogue, unity and action, by listening and building trust.

When the Nobel Committee awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union, Herman van Rompuy delivered this moving and powerful lecture in Oslo: 'From War to Peace: A European Tale'.
