Safe disposal of Western Digital (WD) USB hard drives

Two defective USB hard disks from WD were ready for disposal. Despite their defect, I didn't want to simply throw them away. Theoretically, someone could find them and access the data on them with difficulty. It's unlikely, but I didn't want to take the risk, especially as one of the hard disks is technically functional but no longer responsive because I accidentally rendered it unusable.
