The maestro was back in the Rotterdam Ahoyhal, for the first time in almost four years. In flashing, razor-sharp solos, he proved that he has not forgotten how to play the guitar, even though he has not touched the instrument for a number of years. He hammered out Varèse-like music structures from his Synclavier, typing furiously. He handled the conductor's baton loosely and showed explicit authority, as well as a balding spot on the crown of his head.

Zappa was 47, and he was in great shape. He travels Europe with an eleven-piece band, in which the basic rock group (with permanent members such as singer Ike Willis and keyboard player Bobby Martin) has been gloriously expanded with a horn section.
