Brian Buffington’s Guide to Streaming An Online School Ceremony

What about those Pre-k graduations? Kindergarten? 5th & 8th Grade?

K-12 Sports Ceremonies?

School Club Achievements Nights?

There are lots of students, parents, and teachers who enjoy recognizing school achievements each and every year through graduations, ceremonies, and celebrations.

It’s easy to think solely about the big one…the high school graduation. And for good reason. But what about those other achievement celebrations?

I think you can still put on something magical and MEMORABLE online using some simple tools and strategies, and maybe a little help from your friends.

I had an elementary school principal reach out to me last week, wanting to know the best way to present an online school ceremony.
My brain went instantly to LIVE streaming options, but I then had an epiphany. What if schools could precreate a video masterpiece, with engaging content, licensed music, and plenty of student footage? Then they could then publish the video as a Facebook Premiere or YouTube Premiere, allowing communities to build hype around a specific date and time to show the video. This would be your community’s Hollywood showing. Tell parents to have the popcorn ready. If they can’t provide popcorn, maybe the school and put it in their mailbox. Make it a big deal.

Reasons Why A School Ceremony Video Premiere is Rad:
1. “Video Premieres” give the appearance of a live streamed event, but without the stress of livestreaming.
2. The Build Up - Students, Parents, and Teachers are getting excited about the big event, sharing and telling loved ones around the world to tune in.
3. Less stress - The school admins and teacher team gets to watch the video LIVE with the community, and not have to deal with the production of a live streamed event.
4. Student Footage - There’s many ways to collect student video and photos, but Brian thinks that FlipGrid might be the most simple! (See video)
5. Interaction - The school admin team can comment live during the event using the comment box, engaging the audience.
6. Video Guys/Girls - If you don’t edit video yourself, you have have people in your community who can help you edit and make the most of your video project. Try high school video students and their teacher, local videographer, etc.
7. Gift It - Since this is a quality preproduced video, gift it to your students as you would a yearbook video. The video can be later uploaded to YouTube for streaming.
8. KIDS KIDS KIDS: It’s all about the kids. It’s not the normal, but it’s an effort to bring normalcy and excitement to students who have worked hard throughout the year. They will remember it.

I made a 4-part video series showing in detail how to make this movie magic happen. Please watch, share, and contact me with any questions or ideas. In this together, Brian.
