In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy will present on Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome. We will discuss the pathophysiology of obesity, focusing on the imbalance between caloric intake and energy expenditure, and Metabolic Syndrome, characterized by a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. The lecture will include a discussion on the clinical manifestations of both conditions, such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems. The digital presentation will begin with the diagnostic approach, highlighting the criteria for Metabolic Syndrome diagnosis and the importance of body mass index (BMI) for assessing obesity. Finally, we will review management strategies for both conditions, emphasizing lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, and in some cases, pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery for obesity.
