The story is about William James Sidis, a child prodigy with exceptional intelligence and remarkable academic achievements. He was born in New York in 1898 to immigrant parents. His father, Boris Sidis, was a well-known psychologist, and his mother, Sarah, was a medical graduate.
From an early age, William displayed extraordinary abilities in languages, being fluent in multiple languages by the age of eight, including Greek, Latin, Russian, French, German, Turkish, and English. He even created his own personal language called "Vendergood." Specialists estimated his IQ to be between 250 and 300, a record intelligence level at the time.
At the age of 11, William entered Harvard University, becoming the youngest student in the institution's history. However, he struggled with social interactions, experiencing bullying and isolation from his older classmates. Despite these challenges, he achieved remarkable academic success and was predicted to have a promising career as a mathematician-astronomer.
After Harvard, William continued his education at the William Marsh Rice Institute but faced rebellion from older students due to his age. Eventually, he left the institute and enrolled in Harvard Law School, but he dropped out after three years. He became involved in socialist activities and was arrested, leading to a prison sentence. Instead of prison, he ended up in a sanatorium and later a mental institution.
William distanced himself from academia and sought a simple and normal life. He worked as an accountant but often had to change offices due to colleagues discovering his genius. He preferred solitude and spent his free time writing, with two of his works gaining recognition. However, his reclusive nature and constant stress took a toll on his well-being.
The story highlights the challenges William Sidis faced in fitting into society, his longing for solitude, and his desire for a normal life. It portrays his struggles with social phobia, lack of friends, and constant media attention. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 46 due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
