Google Slides can be a powerful tool for teachers and students to create or receive educational experiences (Boon et al., 2006). In this tutorial, educators will learn the basic functions of Google Slides like how to create a slideshow, add new slides, change the themes or background colors, and insert images, links, and text to the presentation.
Google Slides is an application designed for the purposes of enhancing presentations with stimulating multimedia, as well as creating graphic cognitive organizers for taking notes. According to Boon et al. (2006), teachers should allow time for students to input their notes into easily accessible cognitive organizers in order to improve their performance on assessments. After taking notes in class, students can input them into Google Slides in ways that will help them remember the content clearly. Having students connect this knowledge to pictures, text boxes, sound, and videos in ways that are meaningful to them have shown to improve their comprehension scores on assessments (Chambers et al., 2008).
Creating presentations in Slides can also be an effective form of assessment, because it provides students with opportunities to present their work to an audience. During these presentations, teachers can assess which students have clearly demonstrated concept mastery and which students require further intervention (Chang & Tseng, 2009). This is a form of portfolio assessment, since the Google Slides format is made to work in collaboration with Google Drive. If students are instructed to create their presentations within a folder in their Drive portfolio, teachers can access the files to provide comments and suggestions. Assessment using these methods provides a more holistic approach to learning because folders stay with students from year to year. Portfolio assessment also provides teachers with access to more student artifacts than simply looking at a test score (Johannesen, 2013).
