A 21-year-old tank driver and a 25-year-old military pilot: how they became Heroes / hromadske
In 2021, the then 24-year-old fighter pilot Vyacheslav Radionov took part in the parade for the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's Independence.
At that time, the 20-year-old graduate of the Army Academy was just starting his career as a tank platoon commander.
They died a day apart — on February 24 and 25, 2022. Radionov covered the takeoff of other pilots from the military airfield in Vasylkiv.
Sapilo's tank was hit by a Russian Su-25 missile. Before that, he neutralized a column of Russian heavy equipment.
