For our tenth episode of Silver Tries, we're playing Shaolin on the PlayStation 1.

Shaolin is a martial arts RPG video game developed by Japanese company Polygon Magic and released in 1999. It was published in Europe by THQ the same year; a title so obscure that it saw no release in American NTSC markets. More than twenty years after its release on the PlayStation Shaolin still has no Wikipedia page - the only surviving information regarding the game is found on a literal handful of retro gaming websites. Furthermore, only a few dozen videos of the game have been uploaded to YouTube, alongside two or three complete playthroughs and reviews respectively.

In Shaolin, you assume the role of a player-named protagonist (whose gender is also chosen by the player) and select one of six martial arts styles to use before beginning the game. These are Shaolin; Jeet Kune Do; Eight Extremities Fist (also known as Bajiquan) Tai-Chi; Hung Gar, and Drunken Boxing. Once the game has begun a short cinematic will play to provide story-related background before the main story gets underway

The game follows the well-established Wuxia style of classic Chinese storytelling, a form of hero's journey, as the character travels across China to defeat six martial arts temples and become a master of their respective fighting art, defeating enemies and advancing the storyline along the way.
