3 Fascinating Things About Alien: Romulus. No-1, Director Fede Alvarez wanted to keep the old-school feel, so he brought in the special effects crew from Aliens (1986). They used a lot of practical effects, like physical sets and animatronic creatures, to lay the groundwork for later VFX work. The creature effects were done by Legacy Effects and Studio Gillis, who both have a history with the Alien series. Legacy Effects picked up where Stan Winston Studios left off (from Aliens), and Studio Gillis continued from Amalgamated Dynamics, who worked on Alien³, and the Alien vs. Predator films. No-2, Alvarez made sure to use as many practical effects as possible, including building actual alien models that puppeteers could operate. Actors Renaux and Aileen got genuinely scared working with their “real” alien co-stars. No-3, To add some extra scare, Alvarez used a remote control soundboard with loudspeakers on set. It played different xenomorph sounds and alarms to add to the creepy atmosphere during filming.
