There are many steps involved in producing a quality piece of writing, which begin when you first see the title, and end when you submit the work. These steps are called The Writing Process.
The video is part of the EAP Shorts series of videos from EAPFoundation.com, which provides brief overviews of different aspects of English for Academic Purposes. This video explains the 10 stages of the writing process:
(1) understand the title;
(2) brainstorm for ideas (using listing, clustering or freewriting);
(3) research the topic, to get more ideas;
(4) make notes from your readings, remembering to include source information to avoid plagiarism;
(5) make an outline (plan) of your writing;
(6) write the first draft, focusing on ideas and content (not grammar, spelling etc.);
(7) check your work, preferably by getting peer feedback;
(8) redraft your work, using feedback to help improve;
(9) proofread for grammar, spelling and punctuation; and finally
(10) submit your work.
Following the stages of the writing process is important if you want to improve your writing and succeed at university.
