Do you have a way of playing licks around triads? Most guitarists don’t, but you will have a way after this guitar lesson. Years ago a teacher of mine named, “Norman Brown” helped me learn an easy way to add licks around triads. This lesson outlines his idea.
You can play this method every morning (for a couple of minutes), and in just a few days you’ll have a great new way for adding the best licks around triads.
This method starts with the primary “I-IV-V” triads of a key. Our lesson uses the key of “D” Major along with “D” Major Pentatonic Scale (played in one fret region). Notes from Pentatonic are integrated against the key’s Primary triads.
What’s so cool about this is that the approach behind it all is simple and easy to learn because the Triads are all basic and the Pentatonic scale used is one of the most popular Pentatonic Scales on guitar.
We’ll begin with a focus on the key’s primary chords first, (otherwise commonly known of as the “I-IV-V”). In the key of “D” Major the Tonic “I-chord” is off of the root of “D” Major, with the key’s sub dominant “IV-chord” being “G” Major and the dominant family “V-chord” is an “A” Major.
After we learn the triad patterns for each chord, we’ll set up a popular “Major” Pentatonic scale in the same neck region. Before we wrap up I’ll include an example of triad & pentatonic licks to demonstrates how all of this fits together.
