Zooming into Jupiter. Incredible images captured by James Webb Space Telescope.
Credit: NASA James Webb
This image of Jupiter from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) shows stunning details of the majestic planet in infrared light. In this image, brightness indicates high altitude. The numerous bright white ‘spots’ and ‘streaks’ are likely very high-altitude cloud tops of condensed convective storms. Auroras, appearing in red in this image, extend to higher altitudes above both the northern and southern poles of the planet. By contrast, dark ribbons north of the equatorial region have little cloud cover.

The launch window for NASA's Europa Clipper mission opens on Thursday, October 10, 2024. The scheduled liftoff is at 12:31 p.m. EDT (1631 UTC) from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. This spacecraft, the largest built by NASA for a planetary mission, aims to explore Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. Europa is considered one of the most likely places in the solar system to host environments capable of supporting life. The moon's subsurface ocean may have the necessary components for life, including water, suitable chemical makeup, and energy sources. Although the Europa Clipper mission is not designed to detect life directly, it will gather crucial data on Europa's habitability potential.
