Most connoisseurs of great piano performance are by now familiar (if such spellbinding playing can ever be called "familiar") with Friedman's one of a kind performance of Chopin's Nocturne in E flat Op/52 No.2. But there was a time when Friedman's recordings were nearly impossible to acquire. It was this recording of Chopin's E flat Nocturne, the first of Friedman's recordings to be made available on LP, that started the Friedman Renaissance. The LP was entitled "Great Chopin Interpreters" and was released in 1967, over forty years ago. Anyone who heard Friedman's performance of this nocturne was stunned by Friedman's interpretation. It was impossible to analyze how he did it. We all wanted more. But there was no more. All of his rare recordings were in the hands of collectors. This deplorable situation was rectified in 1984 when Friedmsn's complete recordings from 1923-1941 were re-issued. Friedman's recording of this nocturne has never been surpassed and remains,in my opinion, THE recording of this work.
