California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.
Since then, the medical use of cannabis has been legalized in 39 states and the District of Columbia.
The recreational or adult-use of cannabis is also legal in DC and 19 states.
19 States + the District of Columbia allow adult-use/recreational AND medical marijuana.
20 States allow medical cannabis use, but not adult-use/recreational cannabis use.
11 States Do not allow for medical or adult-use/recreational cannabis use at this time.
