When I was taught about what it looked like for therapy to end with our clients, it was always a graduation-like, kumbaya moment where were had a full session or two to process things ending, reminisce on our clients' growth, and help them plan for a successful future without therapy. There would be a beautiful send-off. Tears might be shed.
In reality, most of my clients don't end therapy this way. It's actually relatively rare (in my practice at least). So in this video, I thought I'd shed light on some of the more common ways that therapy ends. I also go on a rant about why I have a deep dislike of the word "termination" and I hope we can change our vocabulary regarding the close of the therapeutic relationship.
