St. George's Cathedral was built in 1037-1045 in honor of the "patron" of Yaroslav the Wise, St. George. As it was written in the annals, it stood on the square "in front of the gates of St. Sophia", on the same axis as the Golden Gate. At that time, the Cathedral of St. Irina was also built, in honor of the "patroness" of Yaroslav the Wise's wife Ingigerda, in Irina's baptism. Both cathedrals were conceived as parade ensembles and stood on both sides of the city's main street leading from the Golden Gate in the center. Structurally, St. George's Cathedral resembled St. Sophia, but was smaller in size. St. George's Cathedral was destroyed in 1240 (one thousand two hundred and forty) during the Mongol-Tatar invasion. In 1674, the Kyiv voivode, Prince Trubetskoy, built a wooden church in its place. And in 1744, a new stone church was built in its place, on the eastern side of the oldest foundations. In 1884, the renewal of the temple was completed, which greatly changed its appearance. In 1934, the church was destroyed. @UGF
