Cut a Custom Shape from a Photo in Photoshop - make transparent overlays for video and other uses.
Prompted by a viewer question, learn how to take a custom shape in Photoshop and use it to make a cutout from your image. You will learn how to add a shape to a mask and move it into position to make a cutout of this shape from the image.
This looks like it should be a simple process but typically the custom shape tool is used to create a shape filled with the image - so the surrounds are removed, here we want to keep the surrounding portion of the image and just remove the shape - just a little trickier to do.
The resulting image can be used as a video overlay - make the cutout big and you can view a movie through it. It can also be used as an overlay for a photo or for a Lightroom frame.
