Rhinoceros!
Rhinoceroses are majestic, herbivorous mammals with distinctive horns and tough, armor-plated skin. There are five species:
1. Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)
2. White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)
3. Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis)
4. Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus)
5. Sumatran Rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis)
Physical Characteristics:
1. Horns: Made of keratin, used for defense, intimidation, and digging
2. Skin: Thick, gray, and almost invulnerable to predators
3. Body: Large, herbivorous, with short legs and long body
4. Weight: 1,000-3,000 kg (2,200-6,600 lbs)
5. Height: 1.5-2 meters (4.9-6.6 feet) at shoulder
Habitat and Diet:
1. Grasslands, savannas, and tropical forests
2. Herbivorous diet: grasses, leaves, fruits, and bark
3. Water-dependent: need access to rivers, lakes, or wetlands
Conservation Status:
1. All species are endangered due to:
Poaching for horns
Habitat loss and fragmentation
Human-wildlife conflict
2. Protected areas and sanctuaries provide refuge
Interesting Facts:
1. Rhinoceroses have poor eyesight but excellent hearing and smell.
2. They can run up to 30 km/h (18.6 mph) despite their size.
3. Rhinoceroses are social animals, often living in small groups.
4. Their horns are made of keratin, the same protein as human hair and nails.
Threats and Challenges:
1. Poaching for horns, believed to have medicinal properties
2. Habitat loss and fragmentation due to agriculture, urbanization
3. Human-wildlife conflict, leading to injuries and deaths
