Today, I’m going to talk about if coding bootcamps are worth it in 2020? You’ve probably heard about a coding bootcamp from a friend or social media and wondering if this is something for you? That’s actually how I heard about coding bootcamps back in 2014.
I’m Artur Meyster, a bootcamp grad and CTO of Career Karma, helping people get prepared and accepted to coding bootcamps for free on Career Karma!
In this video I’m going to go over 3 main Pros and Cons of doing a coding bootcamp:
Pros:
Coding bootcamps can open lots of doors in technology. Take me for example. In 2014, I was outside tech, in a job I hated and in loads of student debt. Because of my coding bootcamp, I got a job in tech as a software engineer, got to learn for 3 years and now I’m the CTO of my own startup.
Job flexibility. You can freelance, work remotely or hack on projects you’re passionate about.
Structured curriculum - Now a lot of you are probably thinking, is it worth $30k though? There are so many free tutorials online. Why not just learn on your own. Like with any skill, learning to code requires mentorship, support from your peer group and a structured plan. Structure is what differentiates bootcamps from tutorials and moocs. I was stuck in the tutorial purgatory for over 6 months doing JavaScript tutorials but not able to build anything on my own. I realized that with that pace, I was going to run out money and motivation before really knowing how to code. So I did a bootcamp and in the first week I learned more than in prior 6 months!
Cons:
It’s Expensive! Coding bootcamp range from $10-30 thousand dollars. Who can afford that. It’s not a small amount but the good thing is most coding bootcamps offer Income Sharing and other financing options to make it more accessible
Big claims around outcomes. Which brings me to the next point - Outcomes. It’s really hard to tell how effective the school is because a lot of them make big claims. And even if they are true, the outcomes in one city don’t translate to the job market in a different city. So you need to do your research. Best way I found to get this is by speaking with alumni. Go on LinkedIn and look for alumni in your city. If they have jobs, speak to them. Find out how hard it was to get them
Last disadvantage is “commitment”. In order to make this transition successful, you will need to be 100% committed to this process. Which means you will need to sacrifice time with friends, birthdays, Netflix and more.
No I know I said 3 things. But I got a bonus for you. Before you make your mind about if a bootcamp is right for you, why not do a FREE BOOTCAMP PREP on Career Karma where you get to see their teaching style. It’s like test driving a car before buying. If you enjoy it, you continue.
Now if you want to hear about my bootcamp experience, I talk about what I learned, my job search and my first year as a junior engineer in the next video.
