The Lan Adapter plugs into your Switch console via USB, in order to provide an Ethernet connection, aka hardwired. This allows you to have a much more stable connection. We'll test the difference between Wireless VS Wired on the Nintendo Switch in this video, and see if the difference is big enough to justify the purchase of the Lan Adapter!
