OSI stands for Open System Interconnection. An open system is a model that allows any two different systems to communicate regardless of their underlying architecture (hardware or software). It covers all aspects of network communications. OSI model was designed to provide a standard way for computers to communicate so that different computers can be used on the same network.
The OSI reference model divides all communication functions into seven standardized layers. From highest to lowest these are:
Application Layer
Presentation Layer
Session Layer
Transport layer
Network Layer
Data Link Layer
Physical Layer
