In this Robot Operating System (ROS) tutorial, we explain how to install and experimentally test a low-cost lidar in ROS. In particular, we use the following low-cost lidar: SlamTech RPLIDAR A1M8. This lidar has a scanning distance of 12 m, and it is a 2D lidar. We experimentally test the performance of this lidar and we explain how to install and use this lidar in ROS. This lidar can be used for obstacle avoidance, SLAM, and path planning. More videos will follow soon on this topic.
This tutorial is the first tutorial in a series of tutorials on how to use Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and NVIDIA Jetson Nano, as well as Robot Operating System (ROS) for developing low-cost robotics and mechatronics projects that demonstrate amazing capabilities and the different aspects of machine learning, automation, computer vision, and model-based control algorithms.
