Wounds, Healing and Tissue Repair are the main theme of discussion in this lecture. Wound healing is a process in which body makes efforts to restore the integrity of the part which has suffered an injury. The normal healing process involves four stages viz hemostasis, proliferative and inflammatory stage which is followed by remodeling. The wound closure and healing vary based on the type of tissue involved in the injury. Both acute and chronic wounds are highlighted in this medical V-Learning™.

NORMAL HEALING
Wound healing is a mechanism in which body attempts to restore the integrity of the injured part. Various factors influence healing of the wounds. The normal healing process involves hemostasis, proliferative and inflammatory stage followed by remodeling. The healing process in specific tissues like nerves, bone and tendons vary.

ABNORMAL HEALING

ACUTE WOUNDS
Compartment syndrome is a medical condition in which there is elevated pressure in one of the body’s compartments. This leads to insufficient blood supply to tissues in that area. Fasciotomy can be performed if pressures are raised above 30 mmHg. Also, high pressure injection injuries are mentioned here.

CHRONIC WOUNDS
Chronic wounds are the ones which fail to heal in expected time for a particular wound. Leg ulcers and pressure sores fall under this category. Pressure sores are classified into four types. In the end, light has been shed on the vacuum assisted closure.

TISSUE INFECTIONS AND SCARS
The necrotizing soft tissue infections are rare but often fatal. Its types include gas gangrene along with the streptococcal gangrene and necrotizing fasciitis. On the other hand, the types of scars include atrophic, hypertrophic and keloid. The point where scars cross joints or flexion ceases, a tight web is formed. This is termed as contractures.
