❶ Download a FTP client software program. I recommend Filezilla. It works without any problems and it's 100% free.

❷ Click where it says 'Download Filezilla Client'.

❸ Once downloaded and installed you have to configure your Web server settings which you can find at your web server when you log in. In your control panel, the information required should be in the right or left hand column of your web server.

❹ The way you put in the settings for your website into Filezilla you click on the menu items File - Site Manager. You will need to enter the ftp hostpath, port number which you can leave blank. Filezilla assumes port #21 which is almost always the case. Select Normal login type. Enter your username and password.

❺ Click the Connect button which will save your login information and connect you with your web server at the same time.

❻ Once connected with your web server click the folder that says public_html and that would be the root of your web server.

❼ The left pane of Filezilla displays files and folders on your computer. Navigate to where you saved your htaccess file. The right pane of Filezilla represents the files/folders on your web server. Double click the htaccess file in the left pane which will upload it to the current directory on your web server (right pane).
