Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of the Peruvian capital to protest over NATO's military campaign against Serbia.

The protesters - led by members of Peru's Yugoslav community - gathered outside the U-S Embassy to call for an end to the air strikes.

Peruvians have already staged several protests against the attacks and the government has openly opposed NATO's military operation.

Security was tight outside the U-S Embassy in Lima as hundreds of demonstrators marched to protest NATO's military operation against Serbia.

The protest was organised by members of Peru's Yugoslav community, labour unions, student organisations and political groups.

The demonstrators shouted slogans against the United States and its NATO allies.

They accuse them of killing thousands of innocent people and triggering a humanitarian catastrophe.

A Yugoslav embassy representative claims the motives are political.

"The real objective of this unacceptable aggression led by the United States is the political and military domination of Europe and the world. Yugoslavia continues to resist. The Yugoslav people's firm decision is to defend its freedom, territorial integrity and sovereignty until the last consequences."

This is not the first time that Peruvians take to the street to protest against the air strikes.

There have been several protests since the United States and its NATO allies launched the military campaign against President Slobodan Milosevic.

The Peruvian government has openly opposed the air strikes.

They argue it is up to the United Nations Security Council to lead such an operation and to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
