A GREAT IDEA THAT HELD THEM BACK! The Story of the Mercedes 'Double DRS' System (2011-12)
DRS. A necessary evil if you want to watch cars occasionally overtake, but it's quite overpowered, at least at the minute.
And with the FIA getting rid of exhaust blown diffusers at the end of 2011, the teams were looking for new ways to claw back downforce and make the cars faster. Which is often the case when the rules change. The FIA takes away, and the teams find ways of getting it back.
So in 2011 and in to 2012, Mercedes worked out a way of using the F Duct style DRS from 2010 and using it in conjunction with the modern DRS system brought in by the FIA to not only have the DRS as the FIA intended, but also the F-Duct system to stall the front end of the car for more top speed in a straight line.
A great idea, but because of the way the car needed to be packaged, it harmed their development path for the rest of the season.
