Liver disease can be caused by: viral infections, problems with your immune system, cancer, or hereditary diseases.

Some types of liver disease (including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) rarely cause symptoms. For other conditions, the most common symptom is jaundice — a yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes. Jaundice occurs when your liver is unable to clear the substance bilirubin.
