Sometimes, what we’ve always done doesn’t really work - like marking up student work with red pen to notate all the mistakes they made. Hear from Christina Quarelli, Senior Curriculum Specialist at McGraw Hill, on using visible writing goals to provide student feedback.

We learn in small chunks, so provide feedback in small chunks. You can even provide shorter chunks for striving readers and writers. Individualize writing goals and make feedback digestible for all students, no matter where they are in their writing progression, with visible writing goals. Based on their work, assign each student a single writing goal for the week. Put that goal on a sticky note and place it on every piece of writing they do that week, regardless of the content area.

Visible writing goals are digestible, tangible goals that can help students solidify new habits of mind for writing.
