On this day in 1976 The Seychelles became independent from the United Kingdom. British Movietone reports.
For the past ten years these beautiful and exotic islands have sought independence and now, with good wishes from the retiring Governor, Mr Colin Allan, the leader of the Seychelles' People's United Party, Mr James Mancham solemnly take his Oath of Office as the Republic's first President. The Duke of Gloucester makes a presentation and the ceremonies begin with a march past, a salute from the RAF, a magnificent firework display and on to Carnival Time. A highlight of the ceremony was the first Television Broadcast direct from London via the new Cable and Wireless Satellite Tracking Station.
