There is a really bad spyware app thats out with over a million downloads that you need to avoid at all costs if you're trying to follow the Israeli / Hamas conflict.

The app is called RedAlert and is a spyware app in disguise. RedAlert is a malicious copy of a legitimate app called 'RedAlert – Rockets Alerts'. The real RedAlert app delivers notifications of incoming rockets in Israel. Many US users have been using it to keep up to date on the frequency of rocket attacks, where hearing about them in the news takes at least a few hours after the attacks happen, if you even hear about particular ones at all.

The spyware version was originally hosted on a website called "redalerts.me", but has since been taken down until whoever created app potentially shifts to a new website.

On the spyware website two options were given for either iOS or Android download. After installing the app it would request permission for access to your SMS history, numbers, contacts, call history IMEI number, email accounts and others.

On the surface the spyware app functions just like the legitimate Red Alert app, sending alerts like everything is normal, but it's not. After gaining access the app collects all the users info, encrypts it, then uploads it to a particular IP address. What's interesting is that the app includes measures to prevent reviewing and testing of the app for debugging.

To make sure that you don't have the spyware version hold down the app icon and check the app info for the permissions its been granted. If it shows access to your phones contact information and messaging, you've been compromised.
