A simple modification to the neutral position switch NPS to fix the cruise control not setting. The way to test is to try setting the CC in 4th or 6th gear while pushing the gear stick to the left. If the CC sets but promptly unsets when you let go of the gear stick it means the NPS is worn but it can be fixed.
Place a spot weld on the end of the switch shaft and file flat so it's about 1mm longer.
The internal mechanism will function again as the plunger is being pushed in further.

15 April 2021 Update
Last week I did this modification to a friends NPS. He was having the typical symptoms of the cruise control losing it's set. We removed the switch, put a spot weld on the end of the plunger, filed it flat and problem gone!

20 October 2024 Update
For information the length of exposed plunger on a brand new NPS is 7.25mm. The distance from the sealing face at the base of the threads to the end of the plunger is 20.10mm.
