VLANs are used to segment a network into different broadcast domains. While VLANs can communicate within their own domain, communication between different VLANs requires routing. A Layer 3 switch combines the functionalities of a switch (Layer 2) and a router (Layer 3), allowing it to perform routing operations within the switch itself without needing a separate router.
Components of Inter VLAN Routing by Layer 3 Switch
1. Layer 3 Switch: A network switch with routing capabilities. It can make forwarding decisions based on both MAC addresses (Layer 2) and IP addresses (Layer 3).
2. VLANs: Virtual LANs created on the switch to segment the network into different broadcast domains.
3. SVI (Switched Virtual Interface): Logical interfaces on a Layer 3 switch that represent VLANs. Each SVI is assigned an IP address that acts as the default gateway for the devices within that VLAN.
4. Routing Table: Maintained by the Layer 3 switch to determine the best path for forwarding packets to different VLANs or subnets.
Advantages of Using a Layer 3 Switch for Inter VLAN Routing
1. Improved Performance: Layer 3 switches can handle routing within the switch itself, reducing the need for an external router and improving overall network performance.
2. Simplified Network Design: Combining switching and routing in one device simplifies the network design and reduces equipment and management complexity.
3. Lower Latency: Since routing decisions are made within the switch, latency is reduced compared to using an external router.
