This exercise is a combination of an Elvin Jones clinic idea and Ted Reed’s “Syncopation”.

Elvin's thing:
Displaced quarter-note triplets on the snare (starting on the 2nd triplet partial) while playing doted-quarter notes on the bass drum (2 over 3 feel) - hi hat plays on 2&4, standard jazz ride pattern.

Once that’s happening, open up page 38 from Ted Reed's “Syncopation”.

The ride cymbal plays 4-bar "melodies". (You can repeat each melody 3 times before the bass drum ostinato “resets”, but here I just play through them once before starting the next line.) I put a PDF together on my website if you want to read through it.
