Mageia is a Free Software operating system of the GNU/Linux family, which can be installed on computers either as the main operating system, or as an alternative system to one or several pre-installed systems (dual boot). It is a community project supported by the non-profit Mageia.Org organization of elected contributors. Mageia is developed by and for its community of users, and is suitable for all kinds of users, from first-time GNU/Linux users to advanced developers or system administrators.
The latest stable release of the Mageia project, Mageia 8, previously spent more than a year in development. It will be supported with security and bug fix updates for 18 months, up to October 2022.
Mageia 8 is a GNU/Linux distribution for your computer, released by the Mageia community. It can be installed in several ways, with the Live or Classical ISOs being the most popular methods.
Live ISO's let you try Mageia without installation. Use these instructions to put the Live ISO on a CD, DVD or USB device. Then you can run Mageia 8 directly from there, and try Mageia using one of the graphical user interfaces such as GNOME or Plasma.
If you are happy with the Mageia experience, you can then install it onto your hard drive from the Live media.
The Classical ISO is the more traditional way to install Mageia directly. Take a look at the complete documentation for this installer.
Mageia 8 includes several desktop managers including Plasma, GNOME, Xfce, Mate, LXQt and Cinnamon.
There are lots of applications in the official repositories. You can have a look at the Mageia Application Database to get a complete list of packages inside Mageia.
