Is it worth cleaning records, or should we just live with surface noise?

DJ John Peel famously said: “Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, 'Listen, mate, life has surface noise” ...

After buying thousands of vinyl LPs second-hand, I've explored various ways with which to ensure records are as clean as possible before I expose my stylus to them. I think I've come-up with my solution for the ages.
