***Description***
Smart Shoe for Blind People Using Arduino | DIY Assistive Technology Project
In this video, we walk you through the process of creating a smart shoe designed specifically for visually impaired individuals. Using Arduino and ultrasonic sensors, this innovative footwear detects obstacles and provides haptic feedback through vibration motors, ensuring a safer and more confident navigation experience.
***Objectives***
*Enhance Mobility for the Visually Impaired
*Integrate Obstacle Detection Technology
*Create a User-Friendly Design
*Promote Accessibility Through Affordable Technology
*Raise Awareness of Assistive Technologies
*Test and Refine for Real-World Application
Working
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Setup the Ultrasonic Sensors
Front Sensor: Place one sensor at the front of the shoe to detect obstacles directly ahead.
Side Sensors: Place additional sensors on the sides of the shoe for detecting side obstacles.
Ground Sensor: If desired, place a sensor at a downward angle to detect drop-offs or steps.
Wiring:
Connect the VCC and GND pins of the ultrasonic sensors to the 5V and ground pins of the Arduino.
Connect the Trig and Echo pins of each sensor to different digital pins on the Arduino.
2. Connect the Vibration Motors
Place the vibration motors inside the shoe, ideally near the toes, heel, or sides.
Connect the motors to a digital output pin on the Arduino. Use transistors if the motors require more current than the Arduino can provide.
3. Setup the Buzzer
Connect the positive lead of the buzzer to another digital output pin on the Arduino.
The negative lead should be connected to ground.
4. Power Supply
Connect a battery pack to the Arduino's power input (e.g., a 9V battery with a battery clip or a rechargeable battery pack).
5. Programming the Arduino
Write a code that:
Continuously checks the distance data from the ultrasonic sensors.
Triggers the corresponding vibration motor if an obstacle is detected within a predefined distance (e.g., less than 1 meter).
Activates the buzzer if the obstacle is very close (e.g., less than 20 cm).
*********************************
Components Needed:
Arduino Uno/Nano: The microcontroller to process the data.
Ultrasonic Sensors (e.g., HC-SR04): To detect obstacles in front, on the side, or near the ground.
Vibration Motors: To provide haptic feedback when an obstacle is detected.
Piezo Buzzer: To give audio alerts if necessary.
Battery Pack: To power the Arduino and sensors.
Switch: To turn the system on or off.
Wires and Connectors: For connections between components.
Shoe: Preferably one with some space to embed the electronics.
**************************
Additional Features (Optional):
Bluetooth Module: To connect the system to a smartphone app for additional features like GPS navigation or voice feedback.
Waterproofing: Use waterproof casing or materials to protect the electronics from moisture.
Solar Charging: Integrate a small solar panel for charging the battery.
